Shelter Valley is a remote desert-mountain community in southeast San Diego County. Residents here tend to value self-sufficiency — and that mindset translates well to martial arts training. The drive into Ramona MMA Center is longer than most of our service areas at about 55 minutes, but for residents serious about real-world skill development, it’s a worthwhile commitment.

What draws most Shelter Valley students is the focus on practical, applicable training. The self-defense program at Ramona MMA Center is built on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals and supplemented with striking — a complete real-world skill set with practical application as the priority.

A Program Built on Practical Skill

For residents of remote communities like Shelter Valley, self-reliance is part of daily life. Real-world self-defense aligns naturally with that mindset. Our self-defense program teaches awareness, control, and the ability to manage situations using technique rather than strength — skills that work for women, men, and teens of any size.

The training is built on lineage. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is led by Professor Kevin Hosseini, a 4th-degree black belt under Fabio Santos in the Rickson Gracie line. The system goes back generations, and the techniques are tested in live training, not theory.
